Sustainability Policy
Dear customers,
Kelyfos Hotel, being aware of the special conditions of the time in combination with the constantly evolving tourist accommodation sector in the region of Chalkidiki, has set goals of sustainable development concerning the environment and participation in supporting vulnerable social groups. However, as this effort is not limited to the boundaries of our facilities but is a global goal, we ask for your contribution and initiative both during your stay at our hotel and as guests of this place. 2023 is a benchmark for us to take stock of our performance in the industries we present below.
PLASTIC MANAGEMENT
We recognise the devastating impact that plastic waste has on the environment and the significant carbon footprint of plastic production. We are, therefore, striving to phase out single-use plastic. Plastic food collection containers, hygiene kits, etc., have been replaced by sustainable alternatives, using paper or wood wherever possible.
WATER MANAGEMENT
At Kelyfos, we understand the essential value of water. Water is a valuable resource for the local area of Chalkidiki, but it is also a significant operational cost for our facilities. For this reason, we have installed water-saving systems in our supplies. The Hotel has also selected ornamental plants that do not require increased watering needs.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Purchasing energy from the grid is the main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Energy is an essential resource in the hospitality activity. The energy consumption requirements to keep lighting adequate, rooms cool, water hot, and the kitchen running can be the most significant environmental impact of the hotel activity. For this reason, we have undertaken some energy-saving actions. We have installed photocells in common areas, replaced light bulbs with low consumption (LED) bulbs, and operation of air conditioning devices in the rooms is only possible when the windows are closed.
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
Waste is a critical factor in our environmental impact. Not only do they take up volume in landfills and pose a pollution risk, but they are also responsible for producing some of the most potent greenhouse gases, such as methane. For this reason, we have made waste management a priority. Kelyfos aims to prevent waste generation by optimising the sourcing of materials necessary for the operation of our hotel. When reducing waste at source is not feasible, we apply the recycling and/or reuse method. We separate and recycle six categories of waste: Paper, Plastic, Glass, Organic waste, waste oils, Batteries, Toner, and Electrical and Electronic appliances.
FOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT
One of the main areas in which our hotel has tried to reduce its waste is that of food. This waste affects the environment by producing greenhouse gases during decomposition in landfills. In addition, chronic destruction significantly impacts the global food supply chain, depriving the possibility of contributing to the fight against hunger in our wider communities. We have tried to manage our procurement process and set boundaries for preparing our meals with environmentally respectful practices. We ensure controlled food preparation, and in case of surplus, food is made available to vulnerable groups in the area with all due health care.
